Leading Lights of St Hedda’s School join Parishioners from St Hilda’s RC To Welcome Refugees

On Sunday, 4th December St Hilda’s parishioners welcomed a group of asylum seekers and refugees from Teesside to a Mass led by Fr Pat Keogh. The leading lights of St Hedda’s Minnie Vinnie’s, Rhona and Freddie, spoke passionately about their role in ‘getting things done’, and how they have sent filled shoe boxes to children in Ukraine.

During the Mass, the children joined the folk group, enthusiastically playing percussion instruments. Mary Frankland, our link in Teesside and the go-to support for struggling refugees, spoke about the reading, where ‘the wolf lives with the kid, calf and lion cub feed together, using the analogy that we’re all different but that we need to learn to live together in peace.

After Mass we shared a light lunch and many of the visitors tried Irish dancing. The visitors expressed heartfelt thanks, not just for the Christmas hampers, but for the warm welcome they received. The whole day was a joyous occasion, bringing light in these days of darkness and we’d like to thank all those who made such generous donations, and Fr Pat for his continued encouragement and support.
