Street Angels
STREET ANGELS
Whitby Street Angels are volunteers who patrol Whitby town centre on Saturday nights from 10.00 pm to 2.00 am. A patrol team consists of three people, over 18, male or female.
We work in partnership with local organisations such as the local police, the ambulance service, the Borough Council CCTV team and local security services etc. We respond quickly if someone needs help – with first aid – but also by calling the appropriate services if needed. We pick up discarded bottles and glasses (which could potentially be used as weapons!), help people to get a taxi home, be a listening ear, provide flip flops to give tired feet in high-heels some respite and offer blankets and sleeping bags to the vulnerable and homeless. In appropriate circumstances, Christians on the team will also pray with people who request it.
We have several Catholics on the team, but people of all religions and none are welcome to join Street Angels. Each one of us has different skills, talents and beliefs. We value and respect each other.
Our team has been reduced from 18 to 5 active members due to retirements and self-isolation because of Covid. Nowadays we can only cover two Saturdays a month and desperately want to do every Saturday. We are therefore actively looking for more people to volunteer. Perhaps also those with a second home in Whitby might be interested in helping, and having the opportunity to give something back to our community. Do come and join us!
Each volunteer goes out once a month, choosing a Saturday evening on which they are free to go out on patrol.
Venue: The patrol meets at the Mission to Seafarers, Haggersgate, Whitby, YO21 3PP at 9.30 pm Saturday night.
If you are interested, please contact our coordinator first to arrange to arrange a briefing and make an appointment to join a patrol for a “taster”.
